Case Study: Advancing Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors with Oriented Steel Modular Stators

Speaker: Dr. Anmol Aggarwal, Electric Motor Controls Engineer at General Motors

This presentation explores Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) with modular stators made from oriented steel, aimed at enhancing machine performance. Compared to non-oriented steel designs, oriented steel can significantly boost torque and efficiency. Traditionally, steel manufacturers offer magnetic properties only in rolling and transverse directions. Current Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software interpolates these properties inaccurately, necessitating an improved model. This study proposes a method to determine the magnetic properties of oriented steel beyond rolling and transverse directions using flux-injecting probes. Extracted properties are applied to model an oriented steel modular stator PMSM, demonstrating superior average torque and core losses compared to non-modular and non-oriented steel stators.
