Case Study: Crafting a Unique eMotor — Aston Martin Valhalla

Speakers:
Christian Easley, Head of eMotor Design at Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd.
Marco Cossale, Senior eDrive Engineer at Mavel edt S.p.a.

The Aston Martin Valhalla will be the British luxury performance brand’s first Plug-In Hybrid supercar. This presentation will give you an insight into the challenges that were faced and how these were overcome. To achieve the above, an unconventional machine solution was produced—consisting of a fully oil-flooded stator, equipped with novel winding technology and a rotor with effective hybrid cooling to optimize temperatures. This has allowed the delivery of a Front EDU in a confined space envelope with a twin e-motor solution to allow full vehicle torque vectoring on Valhalla.

The presentation will cover:

  • Top-level considerations, overall dimensions, and masses to ensure the Front EDU is efficiently packaged to reduce mass and space
  • Achieving high torque/power density for maximum power extraction from available materials
  • High-rated continuous performance for durability in demanding driving cycles, presenting evidence of robust thermal response using aggressive through-slot Stator and Rotor cooling
  • A novel continuous wave winding strategy and how it optimizes wound stator manufacturing
